There is no comedy in architecture. I love my profession, but it is a frustration of mine that you have to always be so serious. It’s understandable because we deal with life saving structures and planning safe cities, and so sarcasm is not appreciated.
But unfortunately we take it even further than that with self-absorbed egotism and grandiosity.
For instance, if I went before the Seattle Zoning Review Board with a wonderful idea in my master plan to locate the sewage treatment plant right next to the amusement park. Would they understand the joke? When asked by a skeptical design board why I did that, I would respond just like God I’m being efficient by sharing the plumbing..
I think that is funny. My professional colleagues would not be amused.
